Czech director, born in 1965, the son of screenwriter and actor Zdeněk Svěrák. He studied documentary filmmaking at Prague's Film Academy (FAMU). He was celebrated for his college films. His feature debut was the gentle comedy Elementary School, which was nominated for an Oscar. The road movie The Rid won the Crystal Globe at the Karlovy Vary IFF, and Kolya was awarded with the Oscar for best foreign-language feature. Empties also won several awards, including the Audience awards at Karlovy Vary and Cottbus. After that Svěrák made Kooky (2010) (Special Jury Award at Karlovy Vary) and Three Brothers (2014).
