SISTER REGINA Bulgaria, 2025, 100 min, color, documentary

“God, maybe He has forgotten me… Why hasn’t He taken me yet?” These are the words of Sister Regina today, at the age of 103. In December 1940, when she was just 19, police officers raided her father’s home in Varna. The family was given 24 hours to leave Bulgaria. They managed to board the overcrowded ship Salvador, carrying Jewish immigrants to Palestine. On December 12, during a violent storm in the Sea of Marmara, the ship struck a reef, broke in two, and sank. Regina and her father were rescued, but her mother and brother were lost to the sea. A few months later, Regina reached the Holy Land. There, in Jerusalem, the young Jewish woman converted to Christianity and became Sister Regina – who she remains to this day.
