THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE UK, 2025, 130 min, color

Ann Lee, founder of the Shaker movement, was a transformative religious figure in pre-Revolutionary America. Mona Fastvold’s third feature delves into her life, highlighting the childhood and early adult traumas that shaped her beliefs and character. Gifted, devoted, and fiercely protective of her family, Lee later married Abraham, a fellow seeker of spirituality. The tragic loss of all her children and her radical interpretation of scripture fueled her vision of a more just and utopian society. Her devoted followers embraced her ideals through frenzied, ecstatic rituals, depicted in the film as almost a communal substitute for sexuality. Fastvold brings these ceremonies to life with inventive musical numbers and original songs by Academy Award winner Daniel Blumberg, performed by Amanda Seyfried and the cast.
