Baba Zula to close the 20th anniversary Sofia International Film Festival with magnetic concert at Sofia Live Club

Much loved Turkish band Baba Zula will once again come to Sofia to hold a concert at the closing of the anniversary festival edition’s main program. They are well known and adored by filmgoers who surely remember the band’s concerts at previous festivals! This is why their presence at the anniversary festival is symbolical – Baba Zula has become part of the Sofia International Film Festival atmosphere.

The band is currently on a European tour and just days before the concert in Sofia, planned for 20 March, they’ll hold 3 concerts – one in Spain and two in France. Bulgaria is among the band’s favourite destinations – they played at the Transfiguration festival in August 2015 in the authentic Bulgarian village of Dolen.

Turkish band Baba Zula’s performances are like mystic rituals – a mixture of visual art, oriental dances, exuberant costumes, poetry, theatre and animation live, offering the audience an impressive, spectacular show. They’re easily distinguished by their specific sound, known as ‘oriental dub’.

Istanbul fills the musicians’ souls and their music takes you to the heart of the Bosphorus. Thanks to total improvisation, their unique style combines oriental darbuka, electric saz, spoons, Sufi ney, the clarinet as an element of Turkish gipsy music and a modern electronic sound.

The band was set up in 1996 in Istanbul by Levent Akman, Murat Ertel and Emre Onel who left the band in2005 to be replaced by Coşar Kamçı. In 2003 they were joined by singer Oya Erkaya and a year later – unique live drawing master Cern Oykut. Her presence on stage, the creation of images quickly and with inspiration is an important visual component characteristic of Baba Zula and their spectacular show.

The virtuoso musicians have 8 studio albums. Their taking part in director Fatih Akin’s documentary masterpiece The Music of Istanbul brought them world fame. It was also the reason for their first visit to Bulgaria – they played at the closing of the 10th Sofia International Film Festival, exactly 10 YEARS ago!

You only need to hear Baba Zula once to fall in love with their unusual and impressive improvisations! Their original style fits no genre clichés or frames. Their music awakens the imagination and unveils to the public boundless spaces.
