The 20th Sofia International Film Festival will offer a record number of new Bulgarian feature, documentary and short films and Bulgarian co-productions. Bulgarian cinema will once again be a focal point for the festival and we will prepare a series of press releases to familiarize you with the program’s main titles.
Maxim Genchev’s new film is set in the People’s Republic of Bulgaria in the 1950s. Anew commander arrives at an undisciplined border picket formally guarding a sealed Nazi uranium mine with his family. His son is only 10 but quickly adapts to harsh military conditions, unlike his mother who dreams of the luxury of urban life. The lieutenant quickly installs strict discipline but shocking murders begin in the picket the very next day...
“Some things in the film were inspired by my own childhood. Igrew up at pickets because my dad was a border officer”, Maxim Genchev says, “A saboteur killed a soldier with his knife at every passage and put the red star in the cut. I was 6, younger than Simeon [the boy who plays the role], my conscience was marked by this unnatural way of life.”
Inches from the Ground was shot in 17 days at the Chukurovo mine which offers surreal scenery. Except for Simeon Trifonov who played Levski as a boy in Maxim Genchev’s previous film, the cast includes Tsvetomir Angelov, Desislava Chuturkova, Evgeni Budinov, Ivaylo Asparuhov, Matey Genchev, Tsvetomir Nechev, Zlatka Keremidchieva, Goran Gunchev. Hristo Genkov is the director of photography. He worked on over 40 American, French and Bulgarian films, including The Expendables and Conan the Barbarian. The music is by Martin Lubenov. He studied in Chicago and Vienna where he graduated from the conservatory. His wrote music for Hushove and Mission London. The producers are Zlatina Filipova and Desislava Kovacheva.
