“Moonlight” to be premiered in Bulgaria at the 21-st Sofia Film Fest!

The screenwriter and director Barry Jenkins was stormed with applause since his feature debut “Medicine For Melancholy”, a film that was selected at numerous film festivals in 2008. The world premiere of his second picture “Moonlight” occurred last year in Toronto, the only non-competitive festival among the major 5 – Berlin, Cannes, Venice and Sundance.

“Moonlight” follows the life of an Afro-American as a young adolescent, a mid-teen and a young adult. Three different actors are involved in the embodiment of the character at each of these life stages, marked with their troubles and misfortunes. Perhaps this is the reality of a black homosexual man living in Miami. The main burden though rests on the director whose task is to make the audience trust and empathize with the main character.

“Moonlight” is a gentle and poetic story about a young man who tries to understand his true nature. Ecstasy, pain, beauty coming from falling madly in love – all these feelings tears him apart while he struggles to discover and accept his true sexuality. Barry Jenkins creates a sensual and breathtaking cinematography, which reveals the profound truths of life that make us truly human, shedding the light on the persons who played the most essential part in our lives. His works reveal our thirst for love that hunts us till the end of our lives.

“Moonlight” cast Janelle Monáe, Mahershala Ali, Trevante Rhodes, Alex Hibbert, Jaden Piner, Ashton Sanders, Jharrel Jerome, Naomie Harris and André Holland. The script is the director’s own based on the Tarell McCraney play. James Laxton’s cinematography is superb.

„Variety”, „Screen International”, „The Hollywood Reporter”, „The Guardian” – all give 100 out of 100 to this film, included in the program of  the  21-st Sofia Film Fest.
