In 1960, 16 newly independent African countries joined the United Nations. It was a political earthquake that shifted the majority of votes from the colonial powers to the southern countries. A country then becomes the arena where this battle for power at the UN is played out: the Congo. Nikita Khrushchev does not hesitate to hammer his desk with his shoe at the UN summit in reaction to the neocolonial monopolization of the resources of the newly independent Congo. Louis Armstrong, named “jazz ambassador,” is sent on a mission to the country by the American government to cover the ongoing coup.
