Set in the harsh but beautiful cold-stiffened steppes of remote Mongolia, the film tells the epic story of Bagi, a boy who can hear suffering animals from incredible distances. This gift, as well as a terrifying epileptic seizure, convinces the local shaman that Bagi himself will become a shaman. Before he even realizes the prophecy, his family's life is turned upside down forever by the arrival of a military convoy. A nightmarish disaster has befallen the country and all the people must be relocated to the cities and their livestock slaughtered. Bagi finds himself in a bleak mining village, his talents disappearing, his family estranged. But he falls in love with the charming coal thief Zolzaya, who brings him back to self-realization and resistance against the corrupt authorities.
