A funny and cheerful film about despair – it’s not that great philosophical despair of the Russian writers, nor is it existentialism; rather, it is the sort of everyday domestic despair we all know so well. The characters in this film fight against it, each in their own way – some with love, some expecting a big win at the betting shop – and some find salvation in total surrender. As one of the characters says, “I profit the most when I do nothing. I have no income, but no expenses either.”
Young people live in their own, small, infantile world, in a bleak development of high-rise apartment buildings in Belgrade. They drink, swear, smoke dope and waste time. They’re at the point when their youth runs out and they haven’t achieved anything in their lives. They’re occupied with peripheral matters and even when they try to make changes in their lives, they do it in the wrong way. They are waiting for something to wrest them out of their torpor, without realizing that life and spiritual well-being are not things that come as a gift but are something which must be worked at. The characters are full of virtues, including one that is rare in this part of the world: they’re honestly happy about the success of other people.
